Golden Globe Predictions

It’s that time of year again.  In awards season, the middle of January always means it’s time for the Golden Globes.  I’m not really that big of a fan of the Golden Globes (I feel that their nominations were made by a 13-year-old who hasn’t seen half of the movies out that year even though their nominations this year were pretty spot on), but I watch the show regardless.  Anyway, here are my predictions for the winners:

Best Motion Picture – Drama: The Hurt Locker

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy: (500) Days of Summer

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama: Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart)

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama: Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side)

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy: Joseph Gordon-Levitt ((500) Days of Summer)

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy: Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia)

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture: Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds)

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture: Mo’Nique (Precious)

Best Director – Motion Picture: Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker)

Best Screenplay – Motion Picture: Up in the Air (Jason Reitman, Sheldon Turner)

Two of the best things ever are mixed together.  ABC is using The Fray’s new single “You Found Me” from their new CD to promote Season 5 of LOST. Click here to watch the promo. If you’re not a fan of LOST, then you can enjoy the sweet song.  If you’re not a fan of either LOST or The Fray, then I don’t know why you’ve gotten this far in my message.  I hope you’re having a good day though.  Anyway, The Fray’s new CD is due out 2/3/09 and you can currently download “You Found Me” on iTunes.  It’s awesome.

I thought this movie was great.  It’s raunchy, be warned, but not as raunchy as “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”, “Knocked Up”, or “Superbad”.  A couple of weeks ago, I made the mistake of seeing “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”.  I didn’t like this movie at all because it was so dang raunchy and it didn’t have a good message to it.  I know what you’re thinking, “Why would see a movie with the word ‘porno’ in it and not think it was going to be over the top raunchy?”  I knew it was going to be raunchy, but I can take raunchy when it has a “sweet” message to it, “Zack and Miri” does not have this.  Thankfully “Role Models” has a great message behind it.  Much like “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” is about waiting to have sex until you are married and “Knocked Up” is about staying together with someone through tough times, “Role Models” is about forming relationships and sacrificing your time for the betterment of someone else.

If you’re in the mood for a comedy with a feel-good message, and if you’re not too sensitive to inappropriate language, then you will definitely enjoy “Role Models”.  Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott deliver great great performances with spot-on comedic timing.

After seeing that this movie only had 56% on Rotten Tomatoes, I went into the film thinking that it was going to be a movie that is supposed to be good but is actually just disappointing.  Thank goodness I was wrong.  Director Clint Eastwood delivers another stellar drama that may not be as good as some of his previous films (“Letters from Iwo Jima”, “Million Dollar Baby”, “Mystic River”), but it is nonetheless a great film.
The movie is the story of Christine Collins as she attempts to find her missing son.  Early in the film, good news comes about from the LAPD when they tell her they have found her son, but once they are reunited, she discovers that the child claiming to be her son is not her son at all.
One of the things that I loved about this movie is the cinematography.  Clint Eastwood keeps to his signature “only light half of the face” lighting, but this works well with the tone of the film.  All of the acting is spot-on, especially Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich.  If you end up seeing this movie, be warned, there are some pretty disturbing parts that will make anyone with a heart uncomfortable.  If you’re looking for a comedy, this isn’t the movie to see, but if you’re in the mood for a heart-wrenching, emotional drama, then you should definitely check this out.  ”Changeling” is another great movie from director Clint Eastwood that stands as one of the best films of 2008 so far.
